The diagrams illustrate various stages in the life of the salmon.

It can be clearly seen that there are three main stages in the development of the salmon, from egg to mature adult salmon and that salmon spend time in three distinct locations during the cycle, moving from upper river to open sea to lower river and then back to upper river.

The life cycle of the salmon begins when eggs are laid among reeds in the upper river where water is slow moving. Between 5 and 6 months later, each egg hatches and the baby salmons of 3 to 8 cm long, or fries, appear. The fries stay for about 4 years in the fast moving lower river before becoming smolts, which are 12-15 cm in length. Then, the smolts change their habitat one more time to the open sea, which seems quite a different environment.

After 5 years, the smolts which turn into adult salmons, whose length of body is about 70 to 76 cm, return to the river of birth and the cycle begins again. Also, we can see that salmons keep growing in length, as time goes by, but at a different speed, depending on the stages
