The charts compare how much water is used by different sectors around the world and water use in Brazil and Congo in 2000.
It can be clearly seen that an upward trend was observed for global water use and that agriculture accounted for the majority of water usage. Also, the water consumption was much higher in Brazil than in Congo.
In 1900, the largest amount of water was used for agriculture at about 500 km3, while the numbers of industrial and domestic usage were much lower at roughly 100 km3. This was followed by a dramatic increase in water use for agriculture to about 3,000 km3 in 2000. The figure for industrial water use also depicted a considerable rise to over 1000 km3 in the same year, whereas the amount of water used for domestic purpose rose gently to only 500 km3.
In 2000, Brazil had the population of 176 million people while Congo’s accounted for only 5.2 million people. Brazil also had 265 times more irrigated land than Congo and the water consumption per person was much higher at 359 m3 in Brazil but the figure was only 8 m3 in Congo.
