IELTS Writing Task 2 Sample: Economic Progress — Band 7+

Opinions are divided as to whether governments should focus solely on the economic progress and not other aspects of a country. Despite the fact that there are some benefits of emphasizing only on the economic development, I believe that it should not be the most important goal for any country as other aspects should never be overlooked.

On the one hand, many governments should be more attentive to economic development compared to other progresses. Firstly, when the economy thrives, it usually means that business transactions are increasing, new job opportunities are being created, and a higher standard of living for all people. Secondly, the government will be able to collect more taxes from companies. Consequently, the revenues could be used to subsidise and even provide free social welfares like education and healthcare for its citizens. Finally, economic growth encourages investment and therefore encourages a virtuous cycle of economic growth.

On the other hand, there are other aspects of a country that should never be neglected besides the economic progress. One major issue to be considered is its social progress; otherwise, we will have a high rate of economic growth and poverty at same time. In other words, a country’s progress will be destroyed if there are large social inequalities. Also, no country can make progress without paying close attention to environmental protection as global warming and climate change issues have been posing the greatest threat to the earth. Lastly, the progress of a country should take into account factors like access to quality healthcare, availability and quality of education, political stability and people’s happiness index.

In conclusion, it can be seen that economic progress should be the main target for any government but they should still be attentive to other aspects of a country which are equally significant.
